From the Three Lakes Loop road, we followed a spur road out to this vantage point of Dry Straits. This is also the location of a reasonably well hidden garnet mine I remembered from years ago.

On our many rides out of town, we would pass these empty shipping containers. Soon enough these containers would be filled with pallets of canned salmon, put on a barge, and headed south to a storage location somewhere in Oregon.

Everyone else bailed on me (left me at the ferry terminal waiting for the boat) as they went out to get something to eat. Rumor had it that they had an excellent seafood lunch.

The road coming down into Skagway the day before was socked in with heavy fog. Visibility was probably less than 20 feet. Upon our arrival in Skagway, the weather improved every minute that were there. This photo was taken the day of our departure - just as the clouds dissipated from the top of the neighboring mountains.

We received word that our ride home (the Alaska Marine Ferry, Columbia) had an engine fire and was temporarily out of service. Here, the wife is calling to verify that our anticipated ride home has been put back into service and it was back on schedule. Fortunately (due to the limited time we could take off), everything was repaired over the weekend and there were no delays or cancellations.

Moose On The Loose

Trip:Alaska or Bust 2006   (day 8 / 18)
Location:Talor Highway
Area:Chicken
Region:Alaska (US)
Moose, moose, moose. The wife spotted a couple of moose in an open field just in front of us. I quickly pulled over, grabbed my camera, and started to click off some photos. At the perfect spot, the moose crossed the road right in front of us. I lined up for the money shot, pushed the button, and nothing. My camera would not fire. I thrashed for several seconds – but to no avail. My cameras memory card was full and no further images could be added. I may have lost the picture – but I did not loose the moment. I took a deep breath, set the camera down, and watched the size and form of these giant animals as they made their way across the road and out of sight.

It was cold and foggy when we crossed the border from the Yukon back into Alaska at about 9:30am. The fog would lift shortly as we traversed our way across the ridge that plays host to the Top of the World Highway. Next to zero traffic, we had the place to ourselves. Pinch me.

Nearly 4:30 (PST) and our ride for the day is nearly over. Tonight our destination was the Yukon Inn in Whitehorse. The bike and gear still look clean in this picture – that would change… soon enough.

So… the wife and I ride out to this sign early in the morning before all of us continue our journey north. I position the bike in the ditch for to insure a good shot. As I am getting off of the bike, the wife – who is still on the bike - starts leaning to the far opposite side (just like she would do if we were on flat ground). This action tips the bike past its gravitational neutral point – and beyond where I can hold it upright. The more I try to pull the bike back to center, the more the wife dives off of the far side. She wins. The bike takes a long slow trip to the ground as it pulls every muscle in my body – while I try and save it. The bike is now upside down. In the process, the wife did her best impression of an olympic diver (I gave her a 3 for form). At this point, I have no chance in righting the bike by myself. There are zero cars driving by. I then call over the radio for assistance from the other two bikes - who are still in town trying to buy gasoline. They arrive, amazed. It takes all of us to get the bike back on its two feet. We snap the non-action version of this picture - and hit the road.

Looking out on Fish Creek from the relative safety of a viewing platform - hoping to catch a glimpse of the Brown Bear and three cubs that had been reported earlier in the week. No spawning salmon running up Fish Creek yet this year – and thus, no bears either. The wife may have been dissapointed... but not encountering a 1100 pound hungry bear with cubs was all fine by me.

I decided to go out solo to photograph Salmon Glacier during sunset (sometime after 10:00pm). I arrived late, setup my camera gear in a hurry, found that my tripod was broken – so I had to make hurried repairs, on and on. I eventually started on my way back home around 1:00am the next morning. This is how it looked at 40 mph, going down hill, for 30+ miles, camera in one hand, and halogen lights blazing. Don’t try this at home.

It was nearly midnight when I took this shot and the bugs (no apparent during the day) were out in force this evening. I was in full motorcycle gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, etc…) to keep from getting eaten alive.

Salmon Glacier was one of the most spectacular destinations of this trip. 30+ miles of excellent gravel road coupled with truly awe inspiring natural scenery. Trust me, if you have never been here before – this is something that you have to put on your 'must do' list.

Here we are… entering Hyder Alaska for the first time. The road transitions from asphalt (Canadian side of the border) to dirt (US side of the border). Of note, there is no US customs station here. Hey, where are you going to go anyway? However, there is a Canadian customs station. In all cases, the border guards were professional and friendly.
